Quick answer: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and apply nothing. Look in daylight after one hour and again after three to four hours. Shine everywhere suggests oily skin, shine only on forehead and nose suggests combination, tightness suggests dry skin, and comfort suggests normal. Treat the result as a starting point, because skin changes with weather.

Skin type is not the same as a skin problem
Skin type describes how much oil your skin makes and how it feels between washes: oily, dry, combination or normal. A skin concern, such as pimple marks or dullness, is a different thing, and so is sensitivity, which describes how easily skin stings or turns red. You can have oily and sensitive skin at once, or dry skin with dark spots. Knowing your type helps you choose textures (a light gel or a richer cream); it does not tell you which serum you need. For that, start from your main worry, as the which product first guide does.
The bare-face test, step by step
- Wash gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry with a clean towel. Skip scrubs and toners for this test.
- Apply nothing: no moisturiser, serum, sunscreen or makeup.
- Wait an hour in a normal room, not in the sun or under a fan. Notice whether the skin feels tight, comfortable or slick.
- Look in daylight at the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Press a clean tissue on each area and see where it picks up shine.
- Check again after three to four hours. Oil often builds up later in the day, especially in warm weather.
Do it on a normal day, not after a facial, a new product or a long day in the sun.
How to read the result
| What you see and feel | Likely type | What it often means for texture |
|---|---|---|
| Shine on the whole face within an hour or two; skin feels slick | Oily | Light gels, thin lotions and lightweight sunscreen are usually more comfortable than thick creams |
| Shine only on forehead, nose and chin; cheeks comfortable or slightly tight | Combination | Light textures overall, with a little extra care for the drier cheeks |
| No shine, skin feels tight or looks flaky soon after washing | Dry | Hydrating serums, a richer moisturiser and gentle cleansing |
| Little shine, no tightness, comfortable all day | Normal | Most textures work; focus on sunscreen and your main concern |
| Stinging, burning or redness with many products, whatever the shine | Sensitive (a separate question) | Introduce one product at a time and patch test each |
Oil is only part of the story. Skin that feels tight but also shines can be short of water rather than oil, which is why people with oily skin can still feel dry in air conditioning. If your results are mixed, "combination" is a perfectly good answer.
Weather changes your skin type
Many people in Pakistan notice that their skin is oilier in the humid heat of Karachi, Lahore or Multan in summer and drier in the cooler, drier months, especially in Islamabad and the north. Air conditioning and heaters also dry the air indoors. That is why a skin type test is worth repeating when the season changes. Our guides on summer vs winter skincare and the garmi mein oily skin routine cover what to adjust.
Matching the result to Beautefire products
Beautefire does not sell cleansers or moisturisers, so use any gentle product for those. For the products it does sell, skin type matters less than your goal, and these are descriptions of the products, not a prescription:
| Product | Price | Worth knowing about your skin type |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid SPF-95 sunscreen, 30 ml | Rs.1,799 | Described as lightweight; the 95 is a name, not an SPF value. Suits most types, but test the feel before a full day |
| C Glow Vitamin C serum, 30 ml | Rs.1,799 | Described by Beautefire as suitable for all skin types, including oily and combination. Patch test first |
| Clarity Alpha Arbutin 2% serum, 30 ml | Rs.1,799 | Contains a little glycolic acid, so dry or sensitive skin should start slowly, at night only, after a patch test |
| Bloom Base BB cream, 30 ml | Rs.1,949 | Light-to-medium coverage; oily skin can set only the T-zone, dry areas look better without powder |
| Bloom lip balms, 10 g | Rs.749 | For dry lips at any skin type; they contain fragrance (Parfum) |
If oil and shine are your main worry, the oily skin collection and the guides on Vitamin C for oily skin and BB cream for oily skin go further. If you react easily, start with the sensitive skin collection and read patch test kaise karein before anything else.
What not to do while you find out
- Do not judge your skin right after scrubbing or using a strong cleanser: it will feel tight for any type.
- Do not decide from one hot afternoon. Repeat the test on another day.
- Do not add several new products to see what happens. One at a time, with a patch test, is how you learn what suits you.
Who this is not for: if your skin is constantly red, burning, itchy or has a rash, that is not a skin type, and a home test will not explain it. Ask a doctor or dermatologist. This guide is also not a diagnosis of any condition.
Frequently asked questions
Can my skin type change?
Yes. Season, climate, indoor air conditioning, age and the products you use all change how oily or dry skin feels, so it is worth repeating the bare-face test when the season turns.
Is combination skin the same as oily skin?
No. With combination skin the forehead, nose and chin get shiny while the cheeks feel normal or a little dry. With oily skin the shine is across the whole face.
Can oily skin feel dry?
It can feel tight when it lacks water, for example in an air-conditioned office, even though it still makes oil. If that sounds like you, keep a light hydrating step in your routine instead of stripping the skin further.
Do I need to know my skin type before buying a serum?
It helps with texture, but your main concern matters more. Whatever the type, patch test a new serum on the jaw or inner arm first and add one product at a time.
Which Beautefire product should a beginner buy first?
Most beginners start with a sunscreen, then add one serum for their main worry. Hybrid SPF-95 and C Glow come to Rs.3,598 by bank transfer today, or Rs.3,698 with cash on delivery.
