Quick answer: A higher alpha arbutin percentage is not automatically better. The rest of the formula, your skin's tolerance, steady use and daily sunscreen matter as much. Clarity is a 30 ml serum with 2% Alpha Arbutin, hyaluronic acid and a little glycolic acid at Rs.1,799. We do not sell a 3% serum and quote no efficacy numbers.

What the percentage means

The percentage on a serum tells you how much of that ingredient is in the bottle, by weight. It does not tell you how well the serum works on your skin, because that also depends on the other ingredients, the texture, how stable the formula is and how long you use it. Two serums with the same percentage can feel and perform differently. Two with different percentages can also be hard to compare, because brands do not all state the number or the form of arbutin they use.

Why "more" is not an easy answer

  • Tolerance. A stronger serum is more likely to irritate for some people. Irritated skin often looks darker for a while, which defeats the purpose.
  • The rest of the formula. Clarity also contains glycolic acid, which smooths texture but means sensitive skin should start slowly. The other ingredients change how the serum feels and how it should be used.
  • Consistency. A 2% serum you use steadily at night and follow with sunscreen every morning will do more than a stronger one you drop after a week because it stings.
  • Sun exposure. Dark spots return or deepen without sunscreen, whatever the percentage.
  • Cause. Pimple marks, tan, melasma and age spots are not the same thing. A serum is not the answer to all of them. See our guide on melasma vs tan vs dark spots.

We have no tested comparison of 2% against 3%, and we are not going to invent one. If you want a sourced look at another brand's 2% serum, see Clarity vs The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA.

How to decide

Your situationA sensible approach
First time using an arbutin serumStart with a 2% serum, a few nights a week, and patch test first. There is no reason to begin high.
Sensitive or reactive skinGo slowly, one new product at a time, and read the whole ingredient list, not only the percentage.
You have used 2% steadily for many weeks and tolerate itAsk a dermatologist before going higher; do not guess. Improve sunscreen use first.
Large patches, sudden darkening or a diagnosed condition such as melasmaSee a doctor first. A cosmetic serum supports a routine; it is not treatment.
Price is the deciding factorCompare price per ml and the full list, not the percentage alone. Clarity is Rs.1,799 for 30 ml, about Rs.60 per ml.

How to read any arbutin label

  1. Is it alpha arbutin? Arbutin also comes as beta arbutin and as plant extracts, and a label that just says "arbutin" is harder to judge.
  2. Is the percentage stated, or only "with arbutin"?
  3. What else is in the list: fragrance, alcohol or strong acids that could irritate?
  4. Does the brand explain how to use it and does it say to wear sunscreen?
  5. Does it come in a packaging that protects the formula, such as a bottle with a dropper?

Using Clarity the practical way

Clarity is an evening serum. Use two to three drops after cleansing, then moisturise. Because it contains a little glycolic acid, start with two or three nights a week and build up if your skin is comfortable. In the morning, use Hybrid SPF-95; the 95 is part of the name, not a measured rating. Do not start Clarity and a Vitamin C serum on the same day; the start-up plan shows how to add them one at a time. Customers describe their experience on the product page, for example Maryam, who wrote that her dark spots looked lighter after a week. That is one person's view, not a promise, and results take time and differ from person to person. Our longer guide asks does alpha arbutin 2% actually fade dark spots?

Clarity and sunscreen together cost Rs.3,598 at list price with free shipping. Cash on delivery adds Rs.100. Delivery takes about 2–5 working days.

Who this is not for: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a skin condition, or your skin is broken or sunburnt, ask a doctor before starting an active serum. If you want a product that changes your natural skin colour, Clarity is not that; it is for uneven patches, not for whitening.

Frequently asked questions

Is alpha arbutin 3% better than 2%?

Not necessarily. Formula, tolerance, consistency and sunscreen all matter. We have no tested comparison and do not quote results for either strength.

Does Clarity have 3% alpha arbutin?

No. Clarity contains 2% Alpha Arbutin with hyaluronic acid and a little glycolic acid.

Can I use a 2% and a 3% serum together?

There is no reason to double up on the same active. Stacking can irritate. If you want to change strength, ask a dermatologist.

How long does alpha arbutin take to work?

Slowly. Expect weeks, not days, with daily sunscreen, and expect results to vary. Our pimple marks timeline explains what is realistic.

Can I use alpha arbutin with Vitamin C?

Yes, but at different times of day for most people: Vitamin C in the morning and Alpha Arbutin at night. Introduce them one at a time.

Is a higher percentage worse for sensitive skin?

It can be more irritating for some people, but the whole formula matters. Start slowly and patch test whatever you choose.
